The payoff: a report you build once and refresh every month in one click, with your own formatting, variance calculations and charts.

Structure

  1. Inputs sheet: period, scenario, version and entity in cells with drop-downs.
  2. Data sheets: HsGetValue formulas (or ad hoc grids) driven by the inputs.
  3. Report sheet: Excel formulas for variances, %, commentary columns, charts.

Refresh

Smart View › Refresh All refreshes every sheet connected in the workbook. Check that each sheet is associated with the right connection (Sheet Info).

Keep formatting

For ad hoc grids: Options › Formatting › Use Excel formatting, and turn off “Adjust column width” if your layout should stay fixed.

Automate

Smart View exposes VBA functions (declare them from the Smart View SmartView.bas file), e.g. HypMenuVRefreshAll, to refresh from a button or as part of a macro that also exports PDFs.

💡 Add a ‘Last refreshed’ cell (=NOW() set by the refresh macro) and a check row comparing a total to a known control figure. Readers then trust the numbers.

More: refresh Smart View with VBA. That’s the Smart View course.

Examples use a sample Essbase application (Sample.Basic-style dimensions). Connection URLs, applications and member names differ in every company.

Practice

Build the template described in the checklist for your own cube.
