SAP GUI scripting automates the SAP GUI for Windows: entering transactions, filling fields, pressing buttons, exporting lists. It’s how many finance and supply-chain teams automate repetitive reports.
What has to be enabled
- Server: the profile parameter
sapgui/user_scripting = TRUE(set by Basis; often off in production). - Your user: authorisation may be restricted by your security team.
- Client: SAP GUI Options › Accessibility & Scripting › Scripting › Enable scripting; untick the notification prompts only if policy allows.
When to use it
| Use scripting for | Prefer other tools for |
|---|---|
| Repetitive report runs and exports | High-volume postings (use BAPIs, LSMW, or migration tools) |
| Small, stable, screen-based tasks | Anything your IT team has an interface for |
⚠️ Scripts act with your user’s permissions. Ask before automating postings, test in a quality system, and never share scripts that contain passwords.
Use SAP GUI scripting only where your company allows it, on a test/quality system first, and never to bypass authorisations. Examples use standard transactions and made-up data.
Practice
Run the check script while logged into SAP to confirm scripting works on your PC.
