Every notification costs attention, and it takes minutes to get back into deep work. Focus modes let you go quiet without missing the boss or the bank.

Windows 11

  • Do not disturb: Settings → System → Notifications → turn on, or click the bell in the taskbar.
  • Priority notifications: on the same page, “Set priority notifications” — allow calls, reminders and chosen apps (for example Teams) through.
  • Automatic rules: turn on DND outside working hours, when presenting or when duplicating your display.
  • Focus sessions: Clock app → Focus sessions: a timer (25–90 minutes) that turns on DND and hides taskbar badges.

Android

  • Settings → Notifications → Do Not Disturb.
  • People: allow calls from starred contacts and repeat callers (someone calling twice within 15 minutes gets through — useful for emergencies).
  • Apps: allow banking/UPI and your work chat.
  • Schedules: “Sleeping” for nights, a custom “Work focus” for your best working hours.
  • Focus mode / Digital Wellbeing: pause distracting apps (social media, games) for a block of time.

A simple routine

  1. Two 90-minute focus blocks a day, calendar-blocked.
  2. Check email and chat between blocks, not during.
  3. Notifications for social apps off permanently — open them on purpose.
