You try to post an invoice and SAP stops you: “Posting period 008 2026 is not open.” It isn’t a bug — month-end controls are doing their job.

Posting periods in short

  • Company codes are assigned a posting period variant.
  • Finance maintains which periods are open for each variant — typically in transaction OB52.
  • Ranges can be set per account type: assets (A), customers (D), vendors (K), materials (M), G/L accounts (S). So a period can be open for G/L adjustments but closed for vendor invoices.
  • Period 12 plus special periods 13–16 are used for year-end adjustments.

Materials have their own period

Goods movements use the materials management period, moved forward by MMPV. If finance periods are open but you still get a period error on a goods receipt, the MM period may be the issue.

What to do as a user

  1. Check the posting date and document date you entered — a typo in the year is the most common cause.
  2. If the date is right, ask your finance controller whether the period can be opened briefly, or whether the entry should go into the current period instead.
  3. Include the company code, account type, period and document type in your request — it saves a round trip.

Why companies close periods

Closed periods protect reported numbers: once a month is reported to management or auditors, late postings would change history. Most companies close the previous month a few working days after month-end.
