JIS converts half-width characters to full-width (double-byte), mainly for Japanese documents. It is available only when Japanese is enabled as an editing language (File > Options > Language); otherwise Excel shows #NAME?. DBCS does the same job and exists in every version.

JIS in practice
Where you will use it
- Japanese forms that require full-width characters
- Matching data between systems that use different widths
- Cleaning imported Japanese data
Worked example
| Text | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| ABC | =JIS(A2) | ABC |
| Excel | =JIS(A3) | Excel |
| 123 | =JIS(A4) | 123 |
Not calculated here: this Excel has no Japanese editing language. With it enabled, ABC becomes ABC.

| Mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| #NAME? | Enable Japanese as an editing language, or use DBCS |
