The final step is getting the report to people, and keeping it up to date without you.

The project: one-page sales dashboard

  • Cards: Total Sales, Margin %, Orders, YoY Growth % (Lessons 5-7).
  • Line chart: Sales and Sales LY by FY month.
  • Bar chart: Sales by Region, sorted; matrix: Category × FY with conditional formatting.
  • Slicers: FY (synced), Region, Category.
  • Drill-through page for customer detail; a tooltip page on the bar chart.

Check the numbers against the expected-results workbook.

Publish

Home › Publish › sign in with a work or school account › choose a workspace. The report and its data (the semantic model) go to app.powerbi.com.

Licences, simply

Licence Can
Free Build in Desktop; publish to My workspace; not share with others
Pro (per user) Share and collaborate; viewers also need Pro
Premium Per User / Fabric capacity Larger models, more refreshes; capacity lets free users view

Check with your IT team what your organisation has before promising a shared dashboard.

Scheduled refresh

  • Cloud sources (SharePoint/OneDrive Excel files, Azure SQL) refresh directly: semantic model settings › Scheduled refresh.
  • Files on a PC or a local server need an on-premises data gateway installed on an always-on machine.
  • Pro allows up to 8 refreshes a day.
💡 Store source Excel files in SharePoint or OneDrive and connect with the web URL. Refresh then works in the service without a gateway, and the file isn’t tied to one PC.

Share

  • Apps: package a workspace’s reports for a wide audience (best for departments).
  • Share a report with specific people.
  • Teams: add the report as a tab in a channel.
  • Row-level security (Modeling › Manage roles): each regional manager sees only their region.
⚠️ ‘Publish to web’ makes a report public to anyone on the internet, and search engines can find it. Never use it for company data.

Export

In the service: Export › PDF or PowerPoint (static or live slides), or Subscribe to email a snapshot weekly.

You’ve finished the course

You can load and model data as a star schema, set relationships, write measures with SUMX, DIVIDE and CALCULATE, do Indian FY time intelligence, design interactive pages and publish them. Next: the Excel for Finance course, and deeper DAX patterns.

Practice

Download the data model and expected results below. Load all four tables into Power BI Desktop and build this lesson’s steps; compare your numbers with the expected-results workbook.
