Not everything has a connector. Old accounting software, government portals and internal websites need clicks and typing. Power Automate Desktop (PAD) does that on your PC, and it’s free on Windows 10/11.

The designer

Actions on the left (Excel, Browser automation, UI automation, Files, Variables), your flow in the middle, variables on the right. Drag actions in, fill their settings, press Run to test.

A first flow: web table to Excel

  1. Launch new Microsoft Edge with a URL (install the PAD browser extension when prompted).
  2. Extract data from web page: hover over the table, choose “Extract entire HTML table”.
  3. Launch Excel (blank document) › Write to Excel worksheet at A1.
  4. Close Excel with Save As › Close web browser.
💡 Use the Recorder for the first draft, then clean it up: recorders capture extra clicks and fragile positions. Prefer actions that target UI elements by name over clicking coordinates.
⚠️ Desktop flows that log into portals need credentials. Store them in Windows Credential Manager or PAD’s credential feature, never typed into the flow, and follow your company’s policy on automating logins.

Where people go wrong

Problem Fix
Flow breaks after a website update Re-capture UI elements; prefer stable selectors
Runs too fast for slow apps Add “Wait for element” actions, not fixed delays
