You type a file name in the Start menu and Windows finds nothing — but the file is right there in Documents. Usually the search index is incomplete or damaged.
In this article
1. Check what is indexed
Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows. “Classic” indexes only your libraries and desktop; Enhanced indexes the whole PC (it uses a bit more battery while it builds). Folders on other drives or deep in custom paths are often missing under Classic.
2. Add your work folders
Under “Customise search locations” add folders such as D:\Work or your OneDrive folder.
3. Rebuild the index
On the same page open Advanced indexing options → Advanced → Rebuild. It can take an hour or more on a full disk; leave the PC on and plugged in.
4. Search inside files
Advanced indexing options → File Types: for .docx, .xlsx and .pdf choose “Index properties and file contents” to find documents by a word inside them.
5. Use search syntax in File Explorer
invoice kind:=document only documents
datemodified:this week changed this week
size:>50MB big files
ext:.xlsx gst Excel files with "gst" in the name or content
Still nothing?
Run the troubleshooter (Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Search and Indexing) and make sure the “Windows Search” service is running in services.msc. For instant name search across drives, the free tool “Everything” by voidtools is a popular alternative.
