Bring the course together in one file the whole team uses, so every report looks the same without anyone re-formatting.
Build it
- Styles: set fonts and colours for Normal, Title and Heading 1-3 (right-click the style > Modify > tick New documents based on this template only when editing the template itself).
- Numbering: link a multilevel list to the headings (lesson 1).
- Cover page: Title and Company as document-property fields (lesson 4), so filling File > Info updates the cover.
- Sections: cover + contents with roman numbers, body from 1 (lesson 2).
- Footer: Page X of Y and the file name.
- A table of contents and a table of figures (lesson 3).
- File > Save As > Word Template (*.dotx).
Share it
Put the .dotx in a shared folder and set File > Options > Save > Default personal templates location to that folder on each PC. It then appears under File > New > Personal. Updating the template updates every new report from then on.
Next: automate filling such a template from Excel data with the VBA course.
Practice
Download the practice document below: the task list is at the top, the content to work on underneath.
