One Slicer for Several Pivot Tables (Plus Timelines for Dates) 1

Dashboards often have three or four pivot tables. Clicking a separate slicer for each is clumsy — one slicer can drive them all.

1. Same source

A slicer can only control pivots built from the same data source (the same Table or the same Data Model). Build every pivot from one Excel Table — format the data with Ctrl+T first.

2. Insert the slicer

Click any pivot → PivotTable Analyze → Insert Slicer → tick Region (for example).

3. Connect it to the others

Click the slicer → Slicer tab → Report Connections → tick every pivot it should control. Now one click filters them all, including pivot charts.

Timelines for dates

PivotTable Analyze → Insert Timeline → choose the date field. Switch between Years, Quarters, Months and Days at the top right, and drag across a range like Apr–Sep. Connect it with Report Connections just like a slicer.

⚠️ Timelines use calendar quarters (Jan–Mar = Q1). For India’s April–March year, add fiscal columns to the data — see financial year formulas — and use a slicer on them.

When a pivot won’t appear in Report Connections

  • It was built from a different range or a copy of the data — rebuild it from the same Table.
  • One pivot uses the Data Model and another doesn’t.

Tidy slicers

Slicer Settings → hide items with no data; Slicer tab → Columns = 3 to make a compact button grid.
